PEOPLE POWER

This might look like just a patch of black. But if you look closely you will see a dim column of light in the distance. This is the narrow floodlit end wall of the Berlaymont, photographed on Saturday night from my window.

And all the other lights are out!! Someone over there has been reading Berlaymonster.

A small victory for the people, I would say. Do not underestimate the power of the blog.

Is it the same patch of black tonight, Daphne?

Pretty much, although peering closely at it, I think they've closed the shutters rather than switched the lights off. It'll be blazing at 6.00 tomorrow morning again.

From what I can see, le Palais de Justice is in complete darkness; the Atomium, la Basilique de Koekelberg and some steeple around the Grand'Place are glowing. There's also a building with blue lights out there, I think it belongs to Belgacom. And of course, there are lights in many rooms at the Hilton's, but that's only normal.

I can understand we need lights in the streets all night long but other than that, there is obviously a huge unnecessary waste of energy all around us.

At least the Berlaymont was not blazing this week-end, this is indeed a small victory.

i can't see a thing outside. probably due to the fact that the bulb in my outside lamp went years ago.

There is also an evil halloween pumpkin face on the left of the picture. You have summoned the demons, milady!

Admit it Daphne, that picture was taken in broad daylight. You're just a lousy photographer!

Eventually I saw a faint red vertical line. Do you do Varilux?
Will now educate myself about the Berlaymonster.

Your post and the comments here remind me of this.

When the story of global warming is written down in history, he and his "the jury's still out on global warming"; and his Press Secretary, Ari Fleischer's "That would be a big no" when reporters asked him if the president thought we should change our lifestyles will serve to make him seem like the utterly yahooiest of the yahoos.

MK, the blue lit building is the new Dexia Tower at place Rogier, it's extremely smart, designed like a big TV screen, however I would like to know how much energy it consumes. With modern technology, probably less than my hairdryer. But I think we should be told.

Zed, peu importe la raison, your smashed outside lamp is doing its bit for saving the planet.

GB, you jungle people are quite superstitious, aren't you? Do you believe in witches too?

Tippler, you're going to come a cropper in that ageing rock star get-up one of these days. Sunglasses at night not a good idea.

Bart, I am very good at the David Hamilton style soft focus effect, allbeit involuntarily.

Pat, Varilux is what the French call bifocals -- so yes. The Berlaymont building is built in the form of a wonky cross (how symbolic) and the red line is the floodlit end of one of the four wings. Berlaymonster is very good for odd snippets of gossip from Brussels insiders.

Sam, absolutely! None so blind as those who won't see, eh?

There were still some lights on at around 3:30 this morning, when I staggered back from the Fetten Jungen. Perhaps some people were just getting an early start, because they love their jobs so much?

(Hmm, maybe I haven't sobered up yet).
