W.O.M.A.N., I'll say it again

Struck down once again with one of those vicious little viruses that seem to pervade the air space in this country (you’d think Nato, or at least Eurocontrol, might do something about it), my thoughts have turned of late to my own mortality. There comes a time when you wake up and think: “Christ! Is that the time! It’s past 50 o’clock!” You realize how much there is still left to do, and how little time left to do it in. Is there still enough time left to become a best-selling novelist, an award-winning photographer, a fluent Russian speaker, a flamenco dancer, the next Mrs George Clooney, get back down to a size 12 and get the recipe for gratin dauphinois right? When I am finally laid to rest, the epitaph on my tomb will scream “BUT I HADN’T FINISHED!!”

In the event of being knocked down by a bus or some other unexpected accident befalling me, I would like it to be known that there is only one surgeon allowed to apply the scalpel to my delicate flesh: Dr Anton Meyer, formerly of Holby City, now somewhere in America. I still miss him. Rick Griffin is very good, but he lacks Anton’s hauteur and noblesse. Funny how only French words will do when you’re talking about degrees of arrogance, isn’t it?

The thing about Anton was, he was so … masterful. I do like a man to be in control, contrary to anything Harold may have told you prior to his untimely demise. He may have compared me to Rosa Klebb, Ann Robinson, Golda Meir … however, in reality I am but a helpless damsel, seeking a pair of strong manly arms to swoon into. They would have to be strong manly arms, as I am no flimsy floozy. Men just don’t seem to have the gallantry of yore. I suppose it’s our own fault, feminism and all that. We didn’t realize we were putting out mixed messages, and over-estimated the poor dears’ capacity for reading between the lines. Men are such simple creatures. They need simple, clear instructions, such as “Put it HERE” and “Stop NOW”. We overestimated their capacity for change, and now we are paying the price.

Unreconstructed “old” men still understand their role in the scheme of things. Mowing the lawn, paying in restaurants, having a shed … but in return we must live up to their expectations and behave like laydees. Even if it’s not in our nature. Fake it, girls, fake it. A little girlish giggle here and there at their pathetic idea of a joke will not kill us. Fluttering an eyelash and ignoring the spelling mistakes in their tattoos is a small price to pay. Even watching the odd football match can be suffered for the cause (especially at the end where they all take their shirts off).

And as for our appearance, if we dress like builders, we shouldn’t expect to be treated with kid gloves. Leave the Doc Martens at home, ladies – if you want to be sent flowers, say it with a flowery dress (and matching shoes and handbag).

However, I absolutely draw the line at stockings and suspenders. If that’s the price I have to pay, I’ll drive myself to the hospital thanks.

Quelle tarte!

But what about the element of surprise? Wearing slinky lingerie under your basic navvy kit is the vestimentary equivalent of erotica arriving in brown paper. Keep 'em guessing!

And I honestly thought my jokes were funny!
Can't believe I've had the wool pulled over my eyes for so long!

Flux: Men like Anton would get quite cross if I arrived at Sadlers Wells in combat pants, whatever I was wearing underneath. Mind you, he's so handsome when he's angry, it's worth a try.

You're a scream, Cream - where do you find these clips? Nothing unites all nations of the world like taking the piss out of the Germans.

Oh Cream, there is no way the wool you pull over our eyes!! so funny and Daphne you are very funny...

I'm very simple - if a woman were to make a pass at me, I wouldn't realise it until a day later. "Oh, is that what she meant!" Not that I get any passes these days, as I'm invisble now, as far as women are concerned, (though an 80 year old woman did flick her hair flirtatiously when we passed each other, yesterday).
This idea of men being simple is of course promoted by men ... especially when it comes to doing any housework... "How does the vacuum cleaner work, Darling?" and "Oh dear, I've broken your favourite vase. Sorry!"

And in the office: "Can somebody fix the photocopier, I think it needs more paper ....?" Strange, then, that you all (well almost all) know the carburettor from the camshaft on your motor car, understand binary code, and can explain the offside rule in detail after drinking six pints of bitter?

Hope you're better soon Daphne - it could be depression after the footie and the tennis. It is dispiriting. Ah for the days of Fred and Ginny.

Oh, I don't know about the stockings and suspenders, Daph. On a hot day they leave tights in the dust and seem to promote a rather refreshing little air circulation system all their own. Bit of a fiddle when you have to piddle though.

Sam, the knickers go OVER THE TOP.

Get well soon, Daffers.

Wise words, Miss Daphne, but I don't agree that women should fake anything. It's that sort of behaviour that leads men to consort with shemales. I assure you that no female gorilla would ever fake anything. Hope you shake off the virus soon - drink plenty of fruit juice.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I am still feeling pretty grotty and doing a fair impression of a sea lion. Can't seem to get that ball to stay on my nose though.

GB: I think human males should release their inner gorilla. I dream of being carried to the top of the Empire State Building kicking and screaming.

Over the top, Aunty Marianne? But...that's just madness!

I usually wear the self-staying-up sort of stockings but I did wear suspenders once on my wedding day. I can see now where I might have gone wrong...

I can also see how women once needed assistants to help them dress. But come to think of it that's how the last 2 brides I've bridesmaided for did it too. Are we all bonkers in the Western Isles? Nononononono we're magnificently sane - I think you continentals must be doing something different with your hosiery. Some EU legislation gone haywire, I'll be bound.

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better, Daphne. I have a nice soup-recipe that knocks a cold at the marine-mammal stage on its head, if you're interested.

Sam, Problem-Child-Bride said...

It's not clubbed-seal soup, not even metaphorically as i might have just suggested. I'm not a monster. It doesn't even have any fish in it. Only lentils and a verysmall chicken have to die for this soup.

of course you wear your knickers over the top of suspenders. are you all mad ?

Stockings and suspenders look like something out of the Rocky Horror Show. Even tights are banned from my lingerie drawer these days. What's wrong with a nice pair of beige Crimplene slacks (elasticated waist of course) and a pair of pop socks?
