But it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. The building trade is booming thanks to the contracts for mosques, temples, basilicas and converting Anglican churches into restaurants. The Neasden Hindu temple completed in 1995 is the largest outside India, and Our Lady of Peace at Yamassoukro in Cote d'Ivoire, erected by the late potentate Houphouet-Boigny in his home village in 1990, is modelled on St Peter's in Rome and is said to be the largest church in the world.
The Church of England professes to be neither Protestant nor Catholic, which leaves it wallowing in a welter of indecision. Many famous harrumphers left the Church of England over women priests - and some of them were women! (Anne Widdecombe, the Duchess of Kent). I approve of female priests, who must be better qualified than men to offer succour and guidance to the flock, if only by virtue of having nice comfy bosoms to lean on. Now the Archbish seems to think the Church can advise the government on legal matters. I think his boss should have a word in his mitre, and tell him to zip it. I mean, Her Maj is the actual Head of the Church and she doesn't stick her nose into ecclesiastical matters, does she?
Being a deeply spiritual person of Celtic extraction, I puzzle over the concepts of sin, redemption, forgiveness and absolution. My own Irish-Scots-American Catholic grandfather, I am sorry to say, saw the confessional as a sort of car-wash, where he could have his sins removed within the hour and start again by opening time. Islam is even better – thanks to one magic word “Insh'allah”, it’s never your fault to start with. “Allah made me do it, Miss!” - brilliant! The Hebrews, on the other hand, have no escape-hatch, and have to carry their sins around with them their whole life.
The Buddhists and Hindus have perhaps the healthiest attitude to sin: if you commit a sin, you get demoted appropriately in the next life, coming back as anything from a person of a lower caste to a cockroach. A slightly more effective deterrent than three Hail Marys. And perhaps an explanation of why there are so many cockroaches in New York.
You’ve only got to watch Songs of Praise on a Sunday to see that 50-odd people droning “The Lord is my Shepherd” is not going to make Satan put down his pitchfork and turn the thermostat down. Hymns should be rousing, uplifting, and if you can't pass out dramatically, you should at least be able to shout on the last word. The Anglican church need look no further than the Christmas panto for inspiration: goodies, baddies, scary bits, funny bits,
men dressed up as women -- well, they've got those, but they need the demon king bursting out of a trapdoor with a bang and a flash, and a bit of audience participation along the lines of "Et in spirito tuo" or "He's behind you!".
SALE * SALE * SALE * SALE * SALE
I nearly missed the Vatican's special offer: a free indulgence if you pray at a church dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes by 11th February. Hurry, hurry, everything must go!

What a hypnotic film that was, Lady Daphne! That poor ex-virgin nun, so beautiful, so forgiving. She would have made a perfect wife, ironically enough. According to No Good Boyo, the Archbishop of Canterbury is actually Catweazle, which explains a lot. The Saracens were pretty big in the 11th century. (I think you may have mistranslated "inshallah", incidentally).
Yikes! Does that mean I'll be the subject of a fatwa? Of course I was wrong about Insh'allah thanks to the Daily Mail school of comparative religion. Apologies to Moslem readers, and Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus while I'm at it, as I've probably upset them too. I'm not too worried about the Catholics, they like a punch-up anyway.
Poor old Archbish. He does seem to have made, well, an arch-bish of the whole thing. Insofar as anyone understands what he said, it wasn't terribly radical, but of course he should have known how it would be interpreted.
Yesterday, apparently, the Sun's headline was WHAT A BURKHA. Today, it reported on the furore under the headline BASH THE BISHOP (they must have been saving that for years).
Well you don't duck controversy Daphne. I recknon you're spot on about the Buddhists but I must say the Archdruid of Canterbury (as our Celtic colleagues refer to him) has created quite a stir over here. I am sad to read the widespread misinterpretation of his words by so called intelegent political and religeous heads though. Guess they love to fuel a fire!
The major purpose of religion in people's lives, nowadays, appears to be as a means for asking God for wishes to be fulfilled, as far as I can see.
:D
Autolycus, I worked on the Sun briefly many moons ago and have the honour of having been fired by Rebekah Wade for refusing to kiss her feet. I can confirm that there is a cabinet full of groanworthy headlines waiting for a story.
Gambo, growing up a Charlton supporter equips you to suffer for your faith. Who does the Archbish support? Gillingham I suppose.
Sid, you know that saying: "Be careful what you wish for"?
The menu in those converted Anglican churches is pretty basic. Bread and wine...
How about a tiny slice of Camembert?
Personally, I gave up on religion a long time ago. You see I am the addictive type and when I read Marx I decided to steer clear of many things in case I got stoned.
Was that Groucho, Chico or Harpo? :)
Good to see you out and about Krimo, your new blog is great, it's like going out to dinner without the extra calories! But does this mean the end of Screamers? You are a high priest of gastronomy anyway.
Golly - I want to see that film.
On the surface of it, it does seem like an extraordinary thing for old Archie to say - but the surface of it is all I've scratched so far. I only read about it briefly the other day.
It's amazing what we'll swallow in the name of religion though. The dafter the story the better it seems, and the more fervent are its followers.
You'll probably have to order it on DVD, Sam, it's been around since 1992. And make sure it isn't censored for the American market, there are some strong scenes. Old Harvey was over here yesterday for the Baftas, looking cool if a bit grizzled these days. My favourite American actor by far.
Yes he was on the BAFTAS last night. Did he have a pony tail or was I dreaming? The clip is very WOW ish but I don't really want Jesus to have an American accent . No offence!
Sounds like the Arch Bish has got away with it - just a small group wouldn't stand and clap him. I think he should hot foot it to Academe.
I loved the Sun's headline: "Bash the Bishop!"
You know I love clowning around.
Pat, I think you are still dreaming, as Jesus didn't speak in that clip! What sort of accent do you think Jesus should have: Palestinian? French? Geordie?
We should pack Carey off to beards and sandals land, and get Desmond Tutu in his place, before South Africa goes completely up the Swanee.
WILLIAMS! I meant Rowan Williams, not Carey, that was the one before.
You sure you didn't mean Robbie Williams? (Wasn't he ordered to pay £200,000 for copyright infringement on his song 'Jesus in a Camper Van').
By the way I'm sure the Archbish must support Southampton. There aren't any Saints at Gillingham.
Rowan Williams is hardly an islamic fundamentalist. Good post here IMHO
According to Brother Reg,
"What Jesus fails to appreciate is that the Meek ARE the problem!"
Oh - missus clever pantaloons - so, now it's clever to talk about religion?!
Buh hammed....
*runs for cover*
no need to bring the Blues Brothers into it.
